THOMAS B. MAYFIELD Thomas B. Mayfield, III, age 88, of Athens, TN and a winter resident of Ft. Pierce, Florida for more than fifty years, died early Saturday morning, October 25, 2008, at Morning Pointe of Athens. He was born on the Mayfield Farm near Athens, in McMinn County, and was a son of the late Thomas Brient and Goldie Denton Mayfield. He attended Tennessee Wesleyan College and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he studied Dairy Science. He was an active member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, for more than 80 years. During World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and proudly served as a naval aviator and flight instructor maintaining his strong interest in aviation until his death. At the conclusion of his military service, he returned to Mayfield Dairy Farms and became a leader in the dairy industry. He has been praised for his sound business practices, innovation and producing quality dairy products. He retired as President of Mayfield Dairy Farms in 1990. In addition to his milk and ice cream successes, he has been recognized for his many years of involvement and service to industry and many organizations. He was an avid flyer, boater, golfer and fisherman. A former member of Panther Woods Golf Club and was a charter member of the Pelican Yacht Club, Ft. Pierce Florida. Survivors include his wife, Regenia Lawson Mayfield, of Athens; one daughter, four sons and two daughters-in-law, one sister, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, at Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mike Hubble and Rev. Jason Gattis officiating. Committal service will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at Cedar Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 P.M., Monday at Jerry Smith Funeral Home.
