Sister-Marie-Carol Hurley, daughter of Francis and Martha, died on August 26, 2008. Please consult the obituary here:
Hurley, Sister Marie Carol (formerly known as Phyllis Ann Hurley), a member of Barry University's community since its days as Barry College, passed away today, Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan. She was 89 years of age and in the 72nd year of her religious profession as an Adrian Dominican Sister. Sister Marie Carol ministered at Barry for over 31 years, beginning in 1954, serving in various capacities – a full-time faculty member in the former Speech and Drama department, chairperson of the department, director of Barry's productions of weekly Catholic television programs, and as a volunteer in the office of Campus Ministry. Following retirement from full-time ministry at the University, Sister continued to live in the Barry Villa. Over the years, Sister was also a member of a Dominican Preaching Team, a legislative aide to former U.S. Congressman William Lehman, a faculty member at the Miami archdiocesan major seminary, and a founder of the Peace Education Foundation in Miami, an organization that educates children and adults in the dynamics of conflict resolution through peacemaking skills. Along with a zest for life, hearty laugh and warm smile, Sister Marie Carol drew thousands to Barry's campus. When there was very little cultural life in Miami in the 1950s and 1960s, her musical and dramatic productions would fill the Barry auditorium. "I met Sister Marie Carol in the first semester of my freshman year when I enrolled in Speech 101. Over the years, my love and admiration for her grew as I watched her continue to live her Dominican vocation with great enthusiasm and joy," recalled Barry University President Sister Linda Bevilacqua, OP, PhD. "We and the Adrian Dominican Sisters have lost a very dear friend, a dynamic Dominican witness to faithful ministry, and a very committed member of our University family who believed passionately in Barry's mission, ideals and values." Sister Marie Carol was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Francis and Martha (Carroll) Hurley. She graduated from St. Ann High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Michigan, and a Master of Arts Degree in Speech and Drama from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Throughout her life, Sister spent 49 years ministering in education in Detroit and Adrian, Michigan; Miami Beach and Miami Shores, Florida; Toledo, Ohio; Saint Charles and Elgin, Illinois. Including Barry, she taught at four Congregation Institutions: Dominican High School in Detroit, Michigan for four years, Mount St. Mary Academy in St. Charles, Illinois for one year; and Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Michigan for three years. Sister Marie Carol's funeral mass and burial will take place this Friday, August 29th in Adrian, Michigan. A memorial mass for Sister Marie Carol will be held at noon next Thursday, September 4th, at Barry's Cor Jesu Chapel. The Barry community, as well as the general public, is invited to attend. A reception in the President's Wing will follow. Sister Marie Carol is survived by a sister, Joanne Johnson of Payson, Arizona. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Sister Marie Carol may send a donation to the "Adrian Dominican Sisters Scholarship Fund" in care of Mr. Thomas Severino at Barry University, 11300 NE Second Avenue, Miami, FL 33161.
