Sylvia Long Walker, devoted wife of the late Clarence Walker, departed this life on Saturday, February 1, 2003 after a lengthy illness at home and at the Split Rock Nursing Home in the Bronx, NY. She was born in New Rochelle, NY, on March 3, 1920 to James E. and Clara Jackson Long. She attended New Rochelle Schools and graduated from New Rochelle High School Class of 1938. She was a 30 year employee of New York Telephone Company and retired in 1978. While there she was one of the winners of the 1955 Miss Voice and Courtesy Awards representing the Yonkers 8 Division. A Silver Bracelet was given to each person at reception and dinner held for the Honorees. In 1957 a Certificate of Merit was given for her outstanding demonstration of Voice and Courtesy at Mt. Vernon 4 Central Office. She leaves to mourn her loss nieces Elizabeth Brandon, Harriet Newton, Clarice Swaringen, Delores Beard and Dorcas Hart, nephews Frederick and William Archer, Alexander and James Morris, David and George Lee, many grandnieces and nephews, as well as greats; a dear friend, H. Arthur Perry, and companion Yvonne Belfon, along with other family and friends. The wake and service will be held at Bethesda Baptist Church, 71 Lincoln Avenue, New Rochelle, NY, on Thursday, February 6, 2003 at 10 am. Interment at Rosehill Cemetery.
