SUE MAULDIN SMITH - KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Sue Mauldin Smith, formerly of Burlington, Vt., age 93, passed away surrounded by her family on Jan. 7, 2013, at Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, Mich., where she has resided for the past 23 years. She was born Jan. 28, 1919, in Greenville, S.C., the daughter of Robert and Dorothy (Nield) Mauldin. On Jan. 2, 1942, she was united in marriage to Durwood J. Smith, M.D. Sue earned her bachelor of arts from Queen's College, Charlotte, N.C., and her master's of student affairs from Syracuse University. She married Durwood immediately following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and commenced her married life as a military wife. After the war, she moved to Rochester, N.Y., and her family grew to include four children. When Durwood was hired to create the Department of Pharmacology at the Medical School of the University of Vermont, the family moved to Burlington and Sue had two more children. During this time, Durwood and Sue took their large family to England for a year, including a six week caravan camping trip around Europe with six children. They also built a stunning house over- looking Lake Champlain. She was an active member of the College Street Congregational Church, UCC, and PEO, the Philanthropic Educational Organization. In 1975, Sue was widowed, and seven years later she relocated to Plainwell, Mich., where she became an active and beloved presence in the lives of many of her grandchildren. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Richland, she also traveled extensively during these years, including trips to Africa, Japan and China in her 70's. In 1990, Sue moved to Friendship Village in Kalamazoo, where she held many leadership positions. She was active in Garden Club and volunteered for AARP's 55 Alive and the Ladies Library Association. She remained an active member of PEO for over 60 years, and also in her church. Sue is survived by her five children, Sue (Dr. James) Aiken of Breckenridge, Colo., Dorothy Coleen (Dr. Eric) Slosberg of Kalamazoo, Mich., Charleen Smith of Seattle, Wash., Dr. McHardy (Ann) Smith of Titusville, N.J., and Caroline (Ian) Smith DeWaal of Silver Spring, Md.; 12 grandchildren, Kate (John Glenn) Aiken, Robert (Dr. Casey Green) Aiken, Daniel (Monica) Slosberg, Sarah (Mike) Tayter, Deborah Slosberg, Michael (Dee) Riedel, Derry (Alice) Riedel, Heidemarie Riedel, Steven Smith, Nicole Smith, Sophie DeWaal and Ethan DeWaal; seven great-grandchildren, Maxwell Glenn, Reed Glenn, Emma Sue Tayter, Hannah Tayter, Selena Slosberg, Katharine Riedel and Kai Riedel; two sisters, Ann Elliot and Betty Fulenwider; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, Durwood J. Smith on July 5, 1975; son, Durwood "Derry" P. Smith; sister, Dorothy Keathley; and brother, Robert M. Mauldin. A memorial service celebrating Sue's life was held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2013, in Kalamazoo. Arrangements by Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Kalamazoo, MI.
