BEFUS , Ruby (nee Williams) September 26, 1911 - June 6, 2009 With great sadness that the family of Ruby Befus announces her passing away peacefully at the age of 97 years in the General Continuing Care Facility in Edmonton. She was born in Edmonton, a district of London, her father from Wales and her mother from the Black Forest. She and her family immigrated to Alberta as the First World War broke out. Her family settled initially on a homestead N.E. of Hanna. After her mother died of TB within two years of arrival and her father was crippled by a tornado five years later, the family moved to Hanna and then in 1925 to Calgary where Ruby lived all but the last four years of her life. Married for fifty-eight years, she was predeceased by her husband Victor "Peg" Befus; sisters-in-law Katie Befus, Tiresa Befus and Esther Befus; brothers-in-law Alex Befus, Emanual "Swede" Befus and Albert Befus. She is survived by her sister Nora Froelich of Edmonton; sisters-in-law Penny Befus of Edmonton and Dot Befus of Victoria and by many nieces and nephews and their off-spring. Ruby trained as a seamstress and spent most of her career in retail clothing sales. She liked all types of crafts, especially paper tole and embroidering. She was an avid sportswoman who excelled in golfing, bowling and curling and won many trophies. In the 1940's she competed in golf at the national level. She and her husband were life-long members of the Elks Golf and Country Club and the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Calgary. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge and Golf Club, 2502 - 6 Street S.E., Calgary. Interment will take place at Queen's Park Cemetery in Calgary.
