HURLEY, Richard Francis (Dick) Treasury Board, CANLOAN Peacefully in hospital surrounded by family on March 9, 2003 in his 81st year. Dick was raised and educated in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 and was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1943. He volunteered for CANLOAN (a group of 673 officers on loan to the British Army) and served with the 4th Battalion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers in France after D-Day. He was severely wounded in July, 1944 and was invalided home to Canada in September, 1944. Dick attended the University of Manitoba graduating with a degree in Economics and Political Science in 1949 followed by post graduate study at the University of Toronto. During his career with the Public Service of Canada (1952-1987) he held positions with the Departments of Trade and Commerce, Public Works, Forestry and with the Treasury Board. He was predeceased by his parents, Francis John Hurley in 1960, and Jessie Beaton Hurley in 1975. He is survived by his wife, Marianne, his sons Graham (Ann), Big Sky, Montana, John (Kelly), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Paul (Christine and Ashton), Brampton, Ontario, his sister Jeanette Drayton (Barry), Oakville, Ontario. Heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care provided by the Ottawa Hospital, in particular Dr. Haggar, Dr. Jetty, and the nursing staff on Ward E-2 at the Civic. No funeral at Dick's request. Cremation has taken place and private interment will follow at a later date in the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood. Dick's friends are invited to join the family at 1510 Riverside Drive on Friday, March 14 from 4-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian War Museum of Canada, the War Amps of Canada, or the charity of your choice.
