Phyllis-Viola Smith, born in 1925, spouse of Allan Kartinen, daughter of Wilfred and Malvina, mother of Richard and Candace, died on July 31, 2009. Please consult the obituary here:
KARTINEN, Phyllis Viola 2009-08-02 PHYLLIS VIOLA KARTINEN (nee Smith), our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Friday July 31, 2009 in the Palliative Care Unit, St Joseph‘s Care Group Phyllis was born on December 8, 1925 in Nipigon, Ontario to Wilfred and Malvina (Gehl) Smith. She was raised in Port Arthur and attended St. Andrew‘s elementary school and Port Arthur Collegiate Institute. She married Allan Kartinen in 1946 and together they raised their two children. Phyllis worked many years in retail fashion as a buyer and manager in Port Arthur, Edmonton and Vancouver. She always had a great sense of style. She enjoyed many winter vacations in Arizona and many getaways to Hinkley and other favourite casino destinations. While she was living in Vancouver, Phyllis married Paul Zamal. They returned to Thunder Bay in the early 1980s to enjoy their respective families. Paul predeceased her in 1991. In 2004 Phyllis remarried Allan Kartinen with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in attendance. They spent many happy times together before Allan‘s death in 2007. In recent years, Phyllis resided at Chartwell Select where the wonderful care she received from Shelly Harris and the rest of the staff greatly enhanced her quality of life. She cherished the friendships that developed there. Phyllis spent the last month of her life in the Palliative Care Unit of St Joseph‘s Care Group. The wonderful nurses and doctors there showed such care and compassion to Phyllis and the family and did everything in their power to make her comfortable. Phyllis was predeceased by her parents, her husbands, Allan Kartinen and Paul Zamal and her grandson Adam Logozzo. She is survived by her daughter Candace (Joe) Logozzo, her son Richard (Cathy) Kartinen, grandchildren Jason Logozzo, Nicole (Eric) Lehto, Shannon Kartinen and Andrew Logozzo (Valerie Cvar), and by her special great-grandchildren Maia and Noah Lehto who always brought a smile to her face and joy to her days. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Mott, niece Cheryl Mott with whom she had a special bond, and by numerous other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 5th, 2009 at 10:00 AM , in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street with Msgr. P.M. Stilla, V.G. presiding. A private inurnment will follow in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum, St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. If friends desire donations to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation-Northern Cancer Fund would be appreciated
