Phyllis Smith, spouse of Rnold Smith, daughter of Claud and Mabel, mother of Carol, Ken, Phyllis, Phillip, Margaret, Maureen and Fred, died on November 29, 1919. Please consult the obituary here:
Phyllis M. Smith November 29, 1919 to September 29, 2009 Phyllis Gooding was born on a farm in Warman, and attended public school there. She moved to Saskatoon in the 1930s when her father, C.T. Gooding, started the Dairy Pool. She attended high school in Saskatoon and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a B.HSc degree. During World War II, she worked as a chemist at Defence Industries laboratory near Montreal. She then went to Toronto and worked as a dietician at Toronto Western and the Hospital for Sick Children. She carried on a long-distance relationship with her beau, Rnold, which blossomed into full romance by the time the war ended. She married Rnold Smith in 1946, and lived on the farm at Allan until 1952 when they moved to Saskatoon. Phyllis and Rnold had seven children, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and needlework. She made outfits for babies at University Hospital and for her grandchildren. She made all of her descendants a needlework picture celebrating birthdays and weddings. She was an avid golfer, although she seldom broke 100. She played bridge all her life, and was a fierce competitor at the duplicate bridge club. She always enjoyed a game of scrabble, seldom losing to her children, even in her final days. She won the most recent tournament at her church. And no day was complete without watching Jeopardy! Phyllis spent many enjoyable summers at their cottage in Waskesiu. She visited Prince Albert National Park for 67 consecutive years from 1933 to 2009. Phyllis and Rnold spent twenty happy winters at their home in Sun Lakes, Arizona. They enjoyed travelling early on it was Cosmo conventions, later it was cruises. They visited every continent except Antarctica. Phyllis is survived by her brother, Ken (Bette) Gooding; children, Fred (Linda) Smith, Maureen (Ray) Drost, Margaret Smith (Ray Rawlinson), Phillip (Barb) Smith and Phyllis (Denis) Minielly; son-in-law, Mac Bowker; grandchildren, Richard Smith (Nikaila Macfarlane), Bill (Tyrelle) Smith, Rnold Smith II (Melanie Lahmer Smith), Sheila Smith (Sherma Zacharias), Sharon (Kevin) Cholowsky, Jill (Lyle) Haight, Curtis (Carmen) Bowker, Tara (Chris) Crouter, Jazmine Drost, Shawn Smith (Caitlin Knowles), Brianna Smith, Ken Minielly, Keira Minielly and Colin Minielly; and great-grandchildren, Bill, Ezekiel and Samuel Smith, Natasha and Dmitri Cholowsky, Danielle Bowker and Annabella Crouter. She was predeceased by her parents, Claud and Mabel Gooding; her husband (of 62 years), Rnold; brother, Jimmy; son, Ken; daughter-in-law, Rita; daughter, Carol; and grandson, Ryan. A celebration of Phyllis's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2nd at Grosvenor Park United Church, 407 Cumberland Avenue South. A reception will follow at the church, then internment at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Donations in Phyllis's name can be made to Grosvenor Park United Church. Saskatoon Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
