Patrick Howard Manning, 92, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011, at home in Aiken, S.C. His remains will be interred with his beloved wife in Ormond Beach, Fla. Expressions of sympathy for the Manning family may be left at www.southcarolinacremation.com. Mr. Manning was born Aug. 31, 1919, in Newark, N.J., son of the late William J. and Lillian Ryan Manning, and raised with two brothers, William J. Manning Jr. (Ruth) of LaCosta, Fla., and the late Edward J. Manning (Betty) of Hendersonville, N.C. He served seven years in the U.S. Marine Corps, from 1940 to 1947, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1947, after completing apprenticeship training, he became a journeyman ironworker and member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers, Local Union No. 480, Elizabeth, N.J. During his ironworking career, he acted as superintendent of American Steel Erectors of South Plainfield, N.J. Among his proudest achievements as an ironworker were supervision of the construction of the AT&T headquarters building in Basking Ridge, N.J., and the AT&T building on Madison Avenue in New York City. Mr. Manning was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Katherine (Kay) McCarthy Manning, former owner of the Middletown Travel Agency, who passed away in 2001. As 30-year residents of Middletown, N.J., together they raised four children, James P., Robert L. (Jan), Richard A. (Wendy), and Nancy (Joseph) Clifton, before retiring to Palm Coast, Fla., in 1984. Mr. Manning was a past post commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 2179 in Middletown, N.J., and was a member of VFW Post 8696 in Palm Coast, Fla. Mr. Manning actively supported youth activities, acting as baseball coach and Boy Scout assistant scout master. In retirement, he enjoyed golfing, dancing and gardening. Mr. Manning is survived by his four children, as well as six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
