WILLIAMS, OLIVER LOUIS, was born on October 12, 1948, in Margaret, Alabama to Mary Louise Williams and Ivory Waters. He departed this life to spend eternity with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 5, 2011. Oliver attended elementary school in Margaret, Alabama and graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School in Fairfield, Alabama. He relocated with his mother and stepfather, Charles McCreary, to Gary, Indiana in 1967. On February 15, 1969, Oliver married his high school sweetheart, L. Corlene Teague. To this union, one son was born. Oliver worked for US Steel Corporation for a number of years before joining the United States Air Force. He served in the Air Force for 7 years as a proud and dedicated serviceman who served in the Vietnam Conflict. Oliver attended State University of New York at Canandaigua where he studied Social Work. He was also an employee of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Canandaigua, New York, for over 15 years. Oliver retired from the VA Medical Center in 2004. "Ollie", as he is affectionately called, was particularly involved in the addiction recovery of many veterans, especially those from the Vietnam War. As a devoted member of NA (Narcotics Anonymous), Oliver met with his group every Tuesday night to give hope and words of encouragement, as well as spread the word of God to those seeking salvation and relief from active addiction. Additionally, Oliver was passionate about his work with veterans and veteran support groups. Oliver confessed his hope in Christ at an early age and joined the St Phillip AME Church in Margaret, Alabama. He also attended the Centennial United Methodist Church in Gary, Indiana. Oliver was preceded in death by his father, Ivory Waters; and grandparents, Tressie B. Williams, Tom Williams, and Inez and Clarence Benning. Oliver leaves to celebrate his life: mother - Mary L. McCreary of Gary, IN; son - Anthony Williams (Errica) and three (3) grandchildren - Jalen, J. Gavin and Sydni, all of Trussville, AL; sisters - Brenda J. Jackson, Jacqueline Meyers and Pamela Davis, all of Columbus, GA; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and treasured friends and a devoted lifelong friend L. Corlene Williams. Funeral Service will be March 14, 2011 at 11:00am at the Davenport and Harris Funeral Chapel. Interment to follow at the National Cemetery, Montevallo, Alabama. Davenport & Harris Directing
