NEWARK - Margaret "Joan" Williams, 81, died Aug. 2, 2009, at her home. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 5) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 E. Miller St., Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 6) at St. Michael's Church, S. Main St., Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery. Memorials, in her name, may be made to St. Michael Youth Group, 401 S. Main St., Newark 14513; Life Time Care Hospice, 1120 S. Mrs. Williams was born April 15, 1928, in Carbondale, Pa., the daughter of Charles and Mary Steinbrecher Tompkins. On Nov. 19, 1949, Joan married Bruce Williams in St. Daniel's Roman Catholic Church in Syracuse and had 44 blissful years of marriage until his death in 1993. For 14 years, Joan worked as an operator for the New York Telephone Co., leaving in 1960 to raise her family. She was a communicant of St. Michael Church and a member of the NY Telephone Pioneers. Joan had a great love of music and sang until the day she died. She is remembered as a loving and compassionate mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She is survived by four daughters, Barbara (James) Halbert of Scottsville, Margaret (Gary) Magratten of Willits, Calif., Jeanette Housecamp of Newark and Anne (Michael) Montgomery of Port Orchard, Wash.; five grandchildren, Bruce Halbert, Anne Magratten, Emily and Mary Housecamp, Maggie Montgomery; two sisters, Mary Arthur of Ticonderoga and Ann (Donald) Thibault of Chazy, Clinton County; numerous nieces and nephews.
