Mary Katherine     Day, 86     SOUTH PORTLAND -- Mary Katherine Day, 86, went to her eternal rest Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a three year period of failing health.     Mary was born in the Bronx, N.Y., April 18, 1922, the daughter of William and Katherine Didul. She grew up in Long Island City and attended public schools there. Following graduation from high school she received her associate's degree.     She met her husband Donald while he was stationed at the Brooklyn Army Navy Base and was married on Aug. 8, 1945. Shortly after, they moved to Maine. Mary spent most of her adult life in South Portland and was very active in the community. She frequently volunteered with the Red Bank Grade School. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother. Mary was quite adept at bowling and volleyball and was a member of city sponsored leagues.      Mary was a big Elvis Presley fan and had many pen pals around the world. Her love for writing was also very evident in the Poetry she so loved to write. From 1963 to 65 she worked as a bookkeeper in Portland at AH Benoit Clothing she then worked for the Maine National Bank in the telephone billing department.     She was predeceased by her husband Donald in 1975. Survivors include her son, Donald Day Jr. of South Portland; grandson Richard Day of Westbrook; along with several cousins, nieces, nephews and loving friends.     Visiting hours will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. A 10 a.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday the 15 at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.    Mary Katherine Day
