<!-- FH = Culley's MeadowWood Riggins Road Chapel -->Mary Hamilton Meginniss Harris, 95, of Tallahassee, Florida entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 18, 2010 in Tallahassee, Florida. Service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, December 29, 2010 a.m. in the Carter Chapel at St. John's Episcopal Church with burial at Oakland Cemetery.A reception will follow the service in the Fireside Room at Westminster Oaks. Visitation will be held December 28, 2010 at Cully's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road between 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Mary was born February 21, 1915 in Tallahassee to Mary Murphree Meginniss and Benjamin Andrews Meginniss, Sr. and remained a life-long resident.She graduated from Florida High School in 1933 and from Florida State College for Women in 1937, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. After graduation from college, Mary taught Home Economics at Leon High School and, for a short period of time, ran the school cafeteria. She married Joseph Richard Harris (Dick) on December 25, 1939, and they had one son, Joseph Richard Harris, Jr. (Joe). With her mother as Choir Director, Mary started singing in the junior choir at St. John's Episcopal Church as a child. She then sang in the senior choir until her son's death in Viet Nam in 1972. Mary was also the first woman elected to the vestry at St. John's Episcopal Church. Although she was opposed to women serving on the vestry, she later learned it was her father who had nominated her, saying if women were going to serve he wanted to make sure the vestry had the best St. John's had to offer. After her husband's death, Mary worked in the dean's office at the FSU School of Criminology for 25 years, until her retirement in 1983. In addition to her regular duties, Mary voluntarily assisted students in finding employment and otherwise aiding them.Mary is survived by her brother, Walter Murphree Meginniss (Patricia) and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Richard Harris, Sr. her son, Joseph Richard Harris, Jr., and her brother, Benjamin Andrews Meginniss, Jr.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Florida State University Foundation for the Joseph Harris Endowment Memorial Fund in Criminology, a fund established by Mary to honor her deceased son.
