Martha-Aleene Smith, born in 1909, spouse of Hargrove Smith, mother of Fla, Alen, Conn and Don, died on August 16, 2006 at 97 years old. Please consult the obituary here:
SMITH, Martha Aleene, 97, of Plant City, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2006. Mrs. Smith was active in Republican Party politics, served as the executive secretary of the Republican Party in Houston, Texas, and was a member of the Republican State Executive Committee 1952-1961. Since moving to Plant City, she had served as committee woman for Precinct 70, in which she lived. She was active in the election of George Bush as Harris County's (Houston) first Republican congressman and went to Washington, D.C., as his private secretary. Later, when Mr. Bush was appointed U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in New York, she served as his secretary there. She retired to Florida in 1972. She was predeceased by her husband, Hargrove Smith. Survivors include her sons, Don Hargrove of Ellington, Conn., and Alen Reed of Boca Raton, Fla.; four grandsons, Alan Reed II and Ian Andrew of Tampa, and Critz Hargrove and Robert Wintermann of Houston; and seven brothers, J.D., Bob, Tom, Sam, David, Joe and Willis Reed, all of Texas. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and of the altar guild of that church. A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2006.
