GONÇALVES, ManuelHe set sail for the undiscovered country on Saturday, June 30 2012 with courage, dignity, and bravery. He loved life, but he faced death without flinching. Born June 10, 1921 in Arcos de Valdevez, Portugal, he died in Viana do Castelo with his family by his side. Manuel was educated in Coimbra and Oporto universities, taking a degree in Civil Engineering. He emigrated to Canada in 1955. His family joined him in 1957. Manuel worked on several hydroelectric projects in BC; he also spent many years in the federal civil service as the head of lab for the Water Survey of Canada. He was a proud and loyal Canadian but continued to honour his Portuguese roots. In latter years, he divided his time between his homes in Richmond and Caminha, Portugal. He was predeceased by his brother, João, and by his beloved wife, Guilhermina. The world has lost a remarkable man- remarkable for his intelligence, intellectual curiosity, breadth of knowledge, and generosity of heart. He loved to learn new things, whether it was auto mechanics, philology, watch repair, or whatever else came his way. He was a mentor to many, who valued his counsel, relied on his kindness, and enjoyed his company. "...the elements so mix'd in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, This was a man." He is mourned and remembered with love and respect by his daughter, Raquel (McFetridge), son-in-law Gordon, and his cherished grandsons, Matthew and Alex, as well as many friends and family in Canada and Portugal. Vô, how we will all miss you and your wisdom and good humour and your love for us all. As he wished, he is buried with his wife in Caminha, Portugal, united for eternity. Boa Noite, meu querido.
