Smith, Karol WalterDate: May 14, 1922 - March 3, 2007Age: 84Residence: Venice, formerly of Wolcott, Conn., and Savannah, Ga.Visitation:Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Venice Presbyterian Church.Survivors: His wife, Margie Burgess; sons Corey W. of Phoenix, Glenn W. of West Hartford, Conn., and David K. of Pinole, Calif.; a sister, Janet S. Birnie of Enfield Conn.; and four grandchildren.Eulogy:He was born May 14, 1922, in Springfield, Mass., and came to Venice from Wolcott, Conn., and Savannah, Ga., in 1995. He held bachelor of science and master of business administration degrees from American International College and Western New England College. During World War II, he joined the Naval Reserve. A lieutenant (jg), he served aboard the LST 816 in the Pacific as communications and executive officer. At White & Wycoff Manufacturing in Holyoke, Mass., he became sales correspondent and later at Bigelow Sanford Carpet Co. in Enfield, Conn., a systems analyst. While with Uniroyal Inc. in New York City and Oxford, Conn., he held a number of human resource assignments, including director of personnel and training for the International Division and corporate director of compensation. He retired in 1987 as general manager of J J Gallagher Assoc. Management Consulting Firm in Farmington, Conn. While a resident of Venice, he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at the Venice Regional Medical Center, a director of the Jacaranda West Home Owners Association, and a member of the Jacaranda West Country Club.Survivors include his wife, Margie Burgess; three sons, Corey of Phoenix, Glenn of West Hartford, Conn., and David of Pinole; four grandchildren; and a sister, Janet Birnie, of Enfield.A memorial service will be held at the Venice Presbyterian Church, 111 Firenze Ave., at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 9. National Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements.
