She was raised in West Vancouver with her two older brothers, Ralph and John. Their father was an active member of the CCF and Joyce supported social causes from an early age. Joyce joined the RCAF in 1943. She was stationed at the Control Tower at Patricia Bay and Jericho. Part of her role was as a spotter searching for downed aircraft on Vancouver Island. Joyce corresponded with her sweetheart Don when he was overseas and they married in 1946. They moved to Winnipeg and later to Calgary where they raised their three children, Leslie, Don and Jamie. Joyce attended the University of Calgary and obtained a degree in Anthropology in 1974. She co-founded and ran an Immigration Reception centre in Calgary in the 1950s and also helped to found the Native Friendship Centre in Calgary in the 1960s. Joyce received the Queen's Jubilee medal in 1977 for her community work. When Don retired they moved back to the West Coast. They settled in Cordova Bay and later moved to Oak Bay. Joyce was active in the Voice of Women, the Anti-Nuclear movement and was a weekly volunteer at the Global Village Store. She was one of the founding members of the Raging Grannies, singing and demonstrating in support of many social issues. Joyce had a love of theatre, the arts, literature, jazz, Romany music and Harry Belafonte. She and Don travelled widely together and enjoyed going for long hikes. In her last years, Joyce developed dementia and moved to the Central Care Home in Victoria where she lived for eight years. Her family are so grateful to the staff there for their excellent and loving care of Joyce. They were a great support to Don and the family. She will be sadly missed. There will be a Celebration of Life for Joyce at First Memorial Funeral Services, 1155 Fort Street, Victoria on Wednesday, April 10th at 11:00am.
