John James Decker II HURLEY - John James Decker II, 84, of Mountainview Avenue died at The Kingston Hospital Saturday Feb. 19 2011. Born April 23, 1926 in Newburgh. He is the son of the late John James, and Agnes Sweeney Decker. Mr Decker was a graduate of Kingston High School, playing on Varsity Football. He served his country in World War II as a United States Marine, participating in action in Okinawa, and the Ryukyu Islands he was wounded June 21, 1945. Decorated with The Purple Heart, Asiatic Pacific service medal, American Campaign medal, Presidential unit citation ribbon, combat action and sharp shooter medal. Employed by IBM in Poughkeepsie and Kingston for 34 years until his retirement. A member of The IBM Quarter Century Club. An active community volunteer, he joined The Hurley Fire Department in 1965 and is presently a life member. As a veteran of his country, he is a continous member of John F. Jordan Memorial Post Post 5086 VFW where he served for over fifteen years as poppy chairman,and officer of the day. A proud member of the post color guard obtaining first place in New York State competition 1996- 1997. He served the color guard as assistant captain and first lieutenant. Mr Decker was an avid hunter and fisherman, and long time parishioner of Saint Joseph's Church Kingston. Surviving are his wife, Teresa M. (O'Brien) Decker, they were married at The Immaculate Conception Church in Haines Falls on Aug. 30, 1958. His children John J. Decker III, and his wife Lori, of Kingston, Rosemary Buchalski, and her husband Perry, of Lake Katrine, Maureen Garro and her husband Rocco, of Utica, Paul Decker and his wife Lisa of Town of Ulster, Teresa Grubiak and her husband Robert of Silver Lake Wis., Vincent Decker and his wife Deana of Hurley, Joseph Decker, and his wife Jessica of Hurley. Grandchildren, George Hill, Robert Grubiak Jr., Kelly and Patrick Buchalski, Lucia Garro, Megan, Thomas, Sean, Travis Decker, great-grandchildren, Austen,Gaven,Tristen Hill, and Cole Grubiak. A sister, Yvonne Lester, and a brother James K. Decker predeceased him. Friends will be received at The Joseph V. Leahy Funeral Home, Inc., 27 Smith Avenue, Kingston Monday 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. VFW Ritual will take place at 6:30 p.m. A funeral procession will form Tuesday 9 a.m. at The funeral home a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saint Joseph's Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Hurley cemetery.
