John H. Davis FORT LAUDERDALE - John H. Davis, 78, a teacher, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Lauderdale Lakes. He is survived by his wife, Julia Davis. The service was held July 18, 2002, at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale. Roy Mizell & Kurtz Funeral Home (954-467-3426) handled arrangements. He was born on March 20, 1924, in Miami, and later moved to Tallahassee.He always had a job, shining shoes as a boy or working in a jewelry store when he was older. After high school, he was drafted into the Army, where he served in World War II. He returned from the war and went to Florida A&M University after marrying his high school sweetheart, Julia Davis. He began his teaching career in 1950 at Euclid High School in DeLand.During his tenure there, he coached the girl's basketball team to a state championship. He was honored in May for his service at Euclid High School at a school reunion. Mr. Davis taught math and shop at Dillard High School and later at Fort Lauderdale High School when segregation was abolished. Mr. Davis moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1961 and was affiliated with the Broward County Schools until he retired in 1983.But Mr. Davis never really retired. He painted houses to make money to send his five children, four sons and a daughter, to college. All of them have post-graduate degrees. He also was active in the Democratic Party politics in Broward County, serving among other things as a precinct captain. Mr. Davis was a fixture at Mount Olive Baptist Church, known for his devotion to children and kindness towards people.He was a Boy Scout master and a deacon at his church, where he also sang in the choir, was a trustee, taught Sunday school, became its superintendent and led the drive to build the new church building. Mr. Davis had a stroke in 1990, but he continued to work in the church. He drove to church every Sunday with his granddaughter Katina.But in 1998, he had another stroke, which left him speechless. His mind and other senses still functioned, and he enjoyed the company of former students who continued to stop by and see him at his home in the Golden Heights section of Fort Lauderdale.
