John H. "Jack" DavisCedar City, MilfordJohn H. (Jack) Davis, 88, passed away October 15, 2012, at the Milford Memorial Hospital in Milford, Utah. Jack was born September 8, 1924, in Minersville, the son of George Anthony and Arbiteen Fotheringham Davis. His paternal grandparents are Helena Colton Davis and William Jacob Davis, and his maternal grandparents are John Hardy Fotheringham and Martha Ann Myers Fotheringham. Jack's siblings are Dixie Lamb, Helen Williams, Sandra Kuntz, Carol Pearson and a brother who died in childbirth during the flu epidemic. Jack is preceded in death by his parents; his brother; his sisters, Helen and Sandra; and his son, Courtney.Jack attended school in Minersville through his sophomore year, and then Milford High School, where he graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1942. He participated in school plays, Glee Club, managed the yearbook and played first trumpet in the pep, dance, marching and concert bands. After high school in 1942, Jack was employed as a car clerk for the Union Pacific Railroad. He returned to that job after his service in World War II, and remained there until 1947.On March 26, 1946, Jack married Betty Verle Fotheringham in Ely, Nevada. Jack and Betty are the parents of four children, Curtis J. (whose children are Marjorie, Holly, Joseph, Ryan, Christen and Jennifer), Laurel Elizabeth, Courtney John and Ruth Ann Smith (whose children are Haily, Kara, Annie and MaCall). Jack and Betty have 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, with the 18th expected in December of 2012.Jack was inducted into the U.S. Armed Forces on June 3, 1943. He was educated at Texas Tech and the University of Arizona, after which he graduated from the cadet program as a bombardier and was promoted to second lieutenant. He was then trained with radar equipment and became qualified for navigation. Jack's last assignment in World War II was in-flight instructor for radar equipment for bombing and navigation. After two years and seven months service in World War II, Jack joined the Army Air Corps Reserves. On May 19, 1951, Jack was recalled into active duty, where he was promoted to First Lieutenant and was assigned as the Radar Officer on a B-29 heavy bomber crew. Jack flew 33 combat missions over North Korea. He was released from service on October 8, 1952. Jack's total time in the service and the reserve was just under 12 years. He received seven decorations and numerous citations, which included the American Theater Ribbon, Victor Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, and Air Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters. In 1947, Jack accepted employment with the Milford State Bank, with branches in Milford and Beaver, where he remained for more than 32 years. Jack attended and graduated from the Colorado School of Banking at the University of Colorado. He was Executive Vice President and a Director when the Bank was sold to Walker Bank in 1979. Jack worked for Walker Bank, later known as First Interstate Bank, and presently known as Wells Fargo, another ten years before he retired in 1989. During his tenure, the Bank made a large donation to rebuild the Minersville LDS Church after a fire, and expanded to a third branch in Minersville. In 1989, Jack was honored by receiving the Utah Bankers Association Award for Continuation, Dedication and Exemplary Service to Banking and Community.Jack was active in the Milford, Minersville and Beaver County communities. His service included serving two terms on the City Council in Milford; service as secretary, trustee, treasurer and director of the hospital taxing authority which was formed to finance, construct and operate the Milford Hospital; President of the Milford Golf Association; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1546 (Commander, Secretary, Treasurer); American Legion (Post 16 Commander of the American Legion, twice), Lions Club (President twice), and many other civic and community organizations. With help from family members, Jack constructed the Historic Monument at Frisco for the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.In 1997, Jack and Betty moved to Cedar City, where they played golf, made many new friends and otherwise enjoyed their retirement. One of their great joys in retirement has been donating their time and efforts to The Happy Factory. Circle, Cedar City, Utah, 84720.Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 18, 2012 1:00 p.m. in the Milford City Hall located at 26 South 100 West in Milford. Family Visitation will be held from 11:30 to 12:45 pm at the Milford City Hall prior to Services. Interment will be in the Milford Cemetery under direction of Southern Utah Mortuary.
