BANGOR and BUCKSPORT - JoAnn I. Johnson, 93, died Oct. 28, 2011, at a Blue Hill hospital. She was born April 14, 1918, in Bangor, daughter of Earle R. and Anne W. (Twaddel) Harbach. JoAnn was educated in Bangor schools: Pond Street, Hannibal Hamlin; and Sacker School of Design, Boston. Four generations of her family attended Hannibal Hamlin School, Bangor. During her years in grammar school, JoAnn and her friends enjoyed taking the Bon Ton Ferry. She loved her volunteer work from Girl Reserves in high school to Camden Cash for Clothes and Conway Museum, both of Camden. She went to summer camp at Branch Pond and later to Tanglewood when it first opened and then became one of their counselors. She was proud that she walked both the Waldo Hancock and Penobscot Narrows bridges when they first opened to the public. For more than 60 years, she held membership in the National Antique Buttons Society and was the Bangor Button Club president and secretary for many years. She was also a life member of Tri-County and Maine State Button clubs and National Button Society. JoAnn served as president of Dedham Community Club during the time of paying for the new school. She married Hilfred K. Bailey after high school and later Toivo Johnson. She was predeceased by a twin who died at birth; a brother, Howard; a grandson, Allan Cyr; a great-granddaughter, Bailey Cyr; and her husband, Toivo Johnson. Surviving are her much loved daughter and son-in-law, Barbara (Bailey) Coombs and her husband, Ashley; one grandson, Bret H. Cyr; and three great-granddaughters, Jessica, Laura and Megan. A private burial will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor. A service of Brookings-Smith, Bangor.
