Jewel Holt Smith, 77, of Hastings, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004 at her home following and extended illness. A native of Fitzgerald, Ga., she had resided in Hastings since 1948 coming from Arcadia. In addition to raising her family, she had been the bookkeeper with the family farming business, Smith & Johns Inc.She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Wilbur D. Smith; her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Patsy Smith of Hastings, her daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Randy Chastain of Franklin, Tenn.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Lucille Varnadoe of East Palatka, and Murlee and Ed Mayhue of Norcross, Ga.; five grandchildren, Jeb Smith and wife, Wendy, Jacob Smith, Joel Smith, Brian Chastain and wife, Jessica, and Kelly Chastain; four great-great grandchildren, Jared Smith, Cady Smith, Jeremy Smith, and Cayla Smith.Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka with Jeb Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Palatka. No visitation is scheduled.
