James W. Tonerof EndwellJames W. Toner, 80, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2006, in the Lourdes Hospice Program at UHS Wilson Hospital in Johnson City. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Toner; brothers and sisters, John Toner, Agnes O'Shea, Charles and Mary Toner; his in-laws, Daniel Carrara, Joseph Shanaphy, Julia Toner, Edward O'Shea; and a nephew, Michael Toner. He is survived by his loving wife of over 51 years, Joan Toner; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Michael Cook, Endwell, Maureen Toner, Endicott, Kathleen Toner, Bonny Doon, Calif., Susan and Todd Hylton, Vienna, Va., Patricia and Less Goudarzi, Reston, Va.; sons, James M. Toner, Falls Church, Va., Thomas P. Toner, New York, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Timothy and Mary McFillin and Zachary Cook; two sisters, Margaret Carrara, Ormond Beach, Fla., Ellen Shanaphy, Freehold, N.J.; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim's memberships and affiliations include being a member of Our Lady of Angels Parish, Endwell, where he was a Trustee, Parish Council Member, CCD Teacher, Eucharistic Minister, Usher, Lector and President of the Holy Name Society. He was a WWII veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University through the Navy V12 Program and was a member of the Cornell University Alumni Association. He received his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, N.Y., retired from IBM in Glendale after 38 years of service and was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club, was the Union-Endicott High School Computer Coordinator for 19 years, and was a Seton Catholic High School Athletic Booster. He was the founder and President of Project Concern, President of the Legion of Mary, Board Member of the Broome County Catholic Schools and the Town of Union, President of the St. Thomas the Apostle Social Club, NYC, and the Broome County Council of Churches Interfaith Dialog Committee. He was also a Christ the King CYO and IBM Basketball Coach. Jim was a compassionate family man with interests in writing, video taping, sports, cards and fixing things.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main St., Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home on Monday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. The family expresses a sincere and special thank you to Dr. Frank Floyd and Staff, Wilson Hospital North Tower Staff, Lourdes Hospice Program and family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in James W. Toner's name may be made to the Catholic Worker, 36 E. First St., New York, N.Y. 10003, or to the Broome County Catholic Schools Office, PO Box 90, Binghamton, N.Y. 13905.
