TUSCALOOSA | James Burnis Davis, age 99, of Tuscaloosa, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2015 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015 at Alberta Baptist Church with Colby Mouchette, Keith Pugh, Tommy Smothers, and Matt Hallman officiating. Burial will follow in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Memory Chapel Funeral Home, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Potts Davis; his parents, Thomas Edward Davis, Sr.; mother, Leila B. Slayton Davis, and stepmother, Myrtle Allen Davis; brothers, Leonard Shelton Davis, Richard Spurgeon Davis, Thomas Edward Davis, Jr., and Marion Paul Davis.Survivors include his son, James Larry Davis (Patricia); grandson, Michael Larry Davis (Merry Anne); and great-grandchildren, Christin Michelle Hallman (Matt), and James Michael Davis (Karie); and great-great-grandchild, Jayse Hudson Hallman; and brother, John Herbert Davis (Dorothy), Nancy Jacobs Davis, and many more relatives and friends.During World War II, he worked for the military's Northington General Hospital in Tuscaloosa, and later made shells for war time at Holt Foundry Shell Company.He was the owner of 'J.B. Davis & Son, Grocery Store' from 1944 to 1962, then store manager of 'Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store' in Alberta from 1962 to 1978. He then owned a working farm, and raised cattle from 1978 to 1989 in Pickens County. He returned, and retired in Tuscaloosa in 1993. He established his business ethics based upon the book of Proverbs, and claimed it to be his favorite book.He was very active in the community, especially Alberta Baptist Church and Pine Grove Baptist. He completed The Dale Carnegie Training Course for Business, and distributed bibles through the Gideon International, speaking as a Gideon to several churches.Always a friend, and protector of children, and loved by many. His long life was marked by his generosity. He was willing to give more than a tenth of his income for his Lord's work, and to help those in need. At a young age, he supplemented his father's income with half of his salary from his first job of delivering newspapers.Pallbearers will be, Tommy Davis, Bart Tingle, Jerry Johnston, Larry Black, Jay Davis, Matt Hallman, Jerry Hewitt, and Bret Shewmake.Among the many that helped during his sickness, the family acknowledges, West Alabama Hospice, DCH Regional Medical Center sixth floor, ICU, DCH Rehab, and members of Alberta Baptist Church.
