Joan Marie (Vayda) Martin, of South Nyack, formerly of Blauvelt, went to her eternal rest on June 1, 2007 surrounded by her loving family. A long time resident of Blauvelt, Joan was a parishioner of St. Catharine's parish for over 47 years. She was born on August 10, 1928 in New York City to the late Genevieve McMahon and Albion Vayda. A graduate of Marymount College, she went on to receive her R.N. from Columbia University School of Nursing. She married the love of her life Tom Martin in 1952 with whom she recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Counted amongst her greatest blessings was being surrounded by her four children and 13 grandchildren, whom she loved with all her heart, as well as now sharing in eternal life with her husband Tom. After raising her family, she became an instructor in the nursing program at B.O.C.E.S in West Nyack and was also Head Nurse at St. Dominic's Infirmary in Blauvelt. Always one to help others, she served as a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, and was a Eucharistic Minister. Additionally, she served as a long time volunteer in the Pastoral Care Ministry at Nyack Hospital. Joan provided many years of devoted and faithful service to many prayer groups. She took great pride and joy from her study of the Bible and opportunity to share the Lord's word. Predeceased by her husband, Tom, and sister, Sr. Virginia Vayda. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Thad and Kerry Martin; Mary and John McLaughlin; Gerard and Christine Martin, and Genny and Steve Kelly; and her 13 beloved grandchildren, Tom and Ryan Martin; Erin, Johnny, Katie, Brittany and Brian McLaughlin; Danny, Michael and Matthew Martin; and Tom, Megan and Jim Kelly. She also had a special place in her heart for Patti Roth and her family of Pearl River. She is also survived by her sister, Sr. Pat Vayda and brother-in-law, Gaston LaPerche of Bronx, NY, along with numerous nieces, nephews. The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, June 3, 2007 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan. The Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, June 4, 2007 at 10 am at St. Catharine's Church in Blauvelt will be followed immediately by interment at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill.
