TROY J. Thomas Harrington III of Hampton Place, Troy, N.Y., died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 after a brief illness in The Hospice Inn at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Tarrytown, N.Y., he was a resident of the Capital Region most of his life. He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Siena in 1964 where he lettered as the basketball team's manager for three years under legendary coach Dan Cuhna, earning his master's in education from Siena in 1965. He then taught at Philip Schuyler for two years before becoming a professor at Hudson Valley Community College where he taught from 1967-1998. T.H. started the lacrosse program at HVCC in 1978 and was the coach from 1978-1988 where he earned two-time National Coach of the Year in '83 and '86. He was a volunteer coach for both Columbia H.S. and CBA and had published articles in Lacrosse Magazine, Inside Lacrosse and In the Crease magazines. He was also a founding member of the Mohawk Lacrosse club. Mr. Harrington was an integral part of Project Excellence at HVCC, helping to recruit stellar students; he served also on the Board of Alumni and Coaches Club Member at Siena. Tom was a gentle spirit with a willingness to give of himself especially to those in the recovering community. Mr. Harrington was the brother of Cornelia H. (Gerald A.) Sanders Jr. of Albany, Katy Todd of Arlington, Texas, Beth Doehner of Manchester, N.H., Mary (Don) Henry of Rancho Mirage, Calif. He is also survived by cousins, Paul Robbins of Weatherford, Vt. and John Robbins of Pasadena, Calif.; and Dennis McLoughlin whom he considered a son. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Monday morning at 10:15 from the Rockefeller Funeral Home and 11:00 at St. Michael's Church, Williams Rd., Troy, N.Y. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated. Friends are invited to call Saturday evening 3-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Bloomingrove Cemetery, North Greenbush, N.Y. The family has requested that those who wish may make contributions in his memory to the Citizens Council Foundation of Albany, 90 McCarty Ave., Albany, NY 12202.
