OWEN Idwal Hugh Owen, Jr., born September 26, 1924 in Dekalb, Georgia, died on October 3, 2002 in Jacksonville, Florida after an extended illness. After graduation from Decatur Boys High School in Dekalb County, Georgia, Idwal served in the U.S. Second Calvary from 1943-1946. After completing military service, he attended the University of Georgia, where he was a Sigma Chi, and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. Idwal married Carolyn (Peggy) Farnell Owen in 1947 and upon graduation moved to Jacksonville. He owned and operated a dairy farm, tree farm and beef cattle farm for 27 years before retirement. Idwal was dedicated to community service. He served as Past Chairman of the St. Johns River Water Management District, Riverside Hospital Foundation Board, North East Florida Dairy Association, National Producers Association Delegate, Supervisor Duval Farmers Credit Union, and former supervisor Duval Soil & Water Conservation District. Since 1958, he was a member of the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair Association, serving two terms as president. He served on the Mayors Agricultural Advisory Board, the Executive Board Preservation at Tree Hill (P.A.T.H.), Lee & Mimi Adams Environmental Awards Committee, member of the Florida Regional Planning Council, Governor Bob Grahams Tax Reform Commission, and was a former Director of First Union Bank. In addition, Idwal was a founding member of Timuquana Country Club and an honorary member of the Florida Yacht Club. Mr. Owen is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Peggy) Farnell Owens of 55 years; a son, Idwal Hugh Owens, III, his wife, Mary; and a daughter, Susan Owen Williams and her husband Jean (Jay) B. Williams, III; two granddaughters, Lindsey and Carolyn Williams and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers are: Norris Farnell, III, Cleveland Thomson Farnell, Kenneth M. Keefe, Robert Henry Farnell, II, Edward Norris Farnell and David G. Sands. Services will be held Monday, October 7th at 10:30 a.m. at the Ortega Untied Methodist Church, with Doctor Coles officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 6th from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 729 Edgewood Avenue. Private interment will be held in Lake City, Florida at the Farnell Cemetery. The family would like to express our special thanks to St. Catherine Laboure Manor and their wonderful staff for the great care they gave during Idwals stay.
