Honour The Memory of HERBERT DEREK ARNOLD 19 April 1912 13 March 2001 M.A. History. Trinity College, Cambridge. Canon of the Anglican Church of Canada. (Kootenay) In 1989 Derek was given the Anglican Order of Merit by the Primate, Archbishop Michael Peers. Derek fought for the position of the laity in the leadership of the church and for the equality of women in the administration of the Rites of the Liturgy. He was also instrumental in the formation of the Sorrento Centre in the Diocese of Kootenay, dedicated to education and enlightenment of Christian people. Derek, also Secretary-Manager of the OkanaganSimilkameen Parks Society and representative of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, was awarded the honour of the Queen's Silver Jubilee medal for his work in the preservation of our Canadian heritage. His work after "retirement " brought about the Swan LakeChristmas Hill Sanctuary in Saanich, Vancouver Island. Despite all his achievements he remained a quiet, almost "shy " person.
