Obituary of Gilbert Martin


Gilbert Allgood Martin, 81, of Old Grove Road, Greenville, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, after a lengthy illness.Born March 22, 1922, in Greenville, he was the fourth child and second son of the late Wister Austin Martin and Bernice Allgood Martin. His grandparents were Edward Freeman Allgood and Elizabeth Patience Rogers Allgood of Pickens and Anderson counties, and Jeremiah Peden Martin and Cornelia Cheek Martin of Laurens County.Mr. Martin was raised at Three and Five Cateechee Avenue. He was a lifelong member of Augusta Road Baptist Church.During World War II, he served in the United States Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Hornet CV-8 and the U.S.S. San Francisco, and participated in Doolittle's Launch, the Battle of Midway and the Battle of Santa Cruz. He was a member of the U.S.S. Hornet Reunion Club, the U.S.S. San Francisco Reunion Club, the U.S. Naval Institute, the Tailhook Association, and American Legion Post 3.In addition to his service during World War II, Mr. Martin was also in the United States Merchant Marine for 25 years, including during the Korean and Vietnam wars. For this service, he received the Merchant Marine Combat Bar, Atlantic War Zone Bar, Pacific War Zone Bar and Mediterranean-Middle Eastern War Zone Bar.On December 28, 1950, he married Mary Joan Smith of Greenville, who predeceased him. Mr. Martin was also preceded in death by three siblings, Margaret Elizabeth Martin Wilbur Hobbs of Miami, Fla., Mary Frances Martin, who died while a student at Furman University, and Wister Austin Martin Jr., who died in service in World War II. He is survived by three children, Gila Bernice Martin Burdick and husband Raymond Burdick, of Seymour, Tenn., Roric Smith Martin of Greenville, and Kem Elizabeth Martin Malone and husband Terrance Malone, of Summerville, as well as two grandchildren, Sean Patrick Malone and Gem Erin Malone of Summerville. Also surviving are brothers James Cheek Martin of Campobello and Edward Allgood Martin of La Place, La., and twin sisters, Doris Jean Martin Hunter of Charlottesville, Va., and Dorothy Jane Martin Fleming of Cleveland, N.C.A memorial service will be held at Augusta Road Baptist Church on Tuesday at 3 p.m., the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Hare officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Augusta Road Baptist Church, 1823 Augusta Road, Greenville, SC 29605.Palmetto Cremation Service, Greenville, is in charge of arrangements.
