Mrs. Gertrude "Gert" Mary Herron (née Holmes) October 12, 1912 - April 29, 2004 The family of Gertrude Herron are sad to announce the passing of their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother on April 29, 2004 after a short illness. "Gert" was born in Derbyshire, England in 1912 to Florence and James William Holmes. She was the second of seven children, all born in England. When she was 12 the children immigrated to Canada with their mother. Her mother raised the children on her own doing housework and helping out on the farm of her sister and brother-in-law. She was married in 1930 to James Earl Herron in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. Together they had five children, the four oldest were born in Saskatchewan. In 1942 they moved to Fort William, Ontario where the youngest was born. During the Second World War, Earl worked at Canadian Car where the training aircraft were built. For some years after the war, Gert worked with her husband at the Flying Club in Fort William. Then they ran a small lunch counter in the Legion on May Street where they were known for their famous "fish and chips". When the lunch counter closed, she worked for some years at her daughter's store in Vickers Heights. She also worked at Art Danis' store in Rosslyn. After the death of her husband she resided with her daughter and son-in-law in Stanley Park for five years. She then moved into McKivor Court where she resided for the last 21 years. She was very involved with her friends and neighbors at the centre and spent many hours playing cards, bingo and involved in other activities. She will be missed by her loving family, especially her granddaughter Cindy who was always there when "grandma" needed a hand with housekeeping or other duties and by Ron and Doris who would take her shopping, for appointments, out to lunch or to make sure she was well. She is survived by her sister Edith Grochmal in Winnipeg, Manitoba; her three daughters Joyce (Jim) Meservia of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Doris (Ron) Gownlock of Thunder Bay and Margaret of Lumby, British Columbia; her daughter-in-law Shirely Herron of Thunder Bay; her grandchildren Debra (Ken) Roach of Calgary, Alberta, Sharon Breadner of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Lori (Jim) Richards of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Gary (Marie) Bergeron of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, David Bergeron of Thunder Bay, Susan (Len) Adams of Sioux Lookout, Jackie (Jamie) Green, Jamie (Gayle) Gownlock, Cindy (Jay) Oda, Daryn (Judy) Gownlock, Donna, Sandy, Jimmie, Andrew and Kelly Herron, all of Thunder Bay, Allan (Kim) Stokes, William Stokes and Edwin Bushby of Lumby, British Columbia; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Earl in 1978, her children Verna Bergeron in 1995 and James (Chick) Herron in 1989; her son-in-law Rolly Bergeron in 1978; her brothers James and Charley Holmes; her sisters Evelyn Miller, Florence Clayton and Alice Jackson; sister-in-law Margaret Holmes; brothers-in-law George Clayton, Robert Jackson and John Groshmal. A service of remembrance for Gert will be held on Monday, May 3, 2004 at 11:30 a.m. at the Valhalla Inn. Memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Northern Cancer Research Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Jenkens Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre
