CALAIS - George Balentine, 78, died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013. He was born Sept. 4, 1935, in Barre, the son of Ralph and Mildred (Stevens) Balentine. He attended Lyndon Institute in Lyndon and graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1954. He served in the Vermont Army National Guard for six years and was honorably discharged. On Feb. 14, 1976, he married Jo-Anne Feelan in the East Calais Church. He was a heavy equipment operator in the construction business. He later was road commissioner, bus driver and school custodian, all in Calais. He retired in 2008. He was a member of the East Calais Church, Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier and the South Woodbury Church. He was a member and past worshipful master of the Wyoming Lodge 80 F&AM in Plainfield. He served on the Calais Select Board for many years. He enjoyed playing jokes, hunting, fishing, archery and sugaring. Survivors include his wife; a son, Andrew Balentine, of Swanton; a daughter, Angelica Balentine, of Montpelier; a brother, Walter Balentine, of Calais; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and a son, John Ralph Balentine, in 1984. Funeral services will be scheduled in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lamoille Area Cancer Network, P.O. Box 38, Lake Elmore, VT 05657. Northern Vermont Funeral Service in Hardwick is in charge of arrangements.
