DOVER — G. Daniel " Colonel" Mahoney, 71, of Revolution Drive, formerly a longtime resident of South Berwick, Maine, died April 4, 2010 at York Hospital.Dan was born in Groton, Mass., on Aug. 11, 1938, son of George and Barbara (Cameron) Mahony. He attended schools in Littleton, where he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Neville R. Holland. He furthered his education at Lowell Tech, where he graduated in 1960 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He put his skills to work later that summer beginning a career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that would span more than 30 years. In 1960, he would also marry his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Janet (Howard) Mahony and together they would make a home for a time in Portsmouth and Greenland before settling and raising their family in South Berwick for many years. Active in his community Dan shared his love of horses with his children and the families. He enjoyed membership with in the Silverheels Riding Club and the local 4-H Club. He was an active member of St. John's Masonic Lodge 51 A.F. & A.M. of South Berwick serving in many capacities including Master of the Lodge in 1990. He was well known for his glass etching, which demonstrated his passion and talent for art and drawing. His first love was unquestionably his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Janet; a daughter, Lisa Frye and a son, Michael P. Mahony, both of South Berwick; grandchildren, James and Thomas Frye and Morgan, Parker and Hunter Rose Mahony; his stepfather, Neville R. Holland of Portsmouth; a sister, Kate "Donna" Mahony of Pinehurst, N.C., as well as three nieces and three nephews. A funeral will be held on Friday, April 9, at 11 a.m. in the First Parish Federated Church in South Berwick with the Rev. Donna Lee Muise, officiating, with a time of refreshment and sharing following the service in the church parish hall. Friends may visit with Dan's family on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery Maine with a Masonic service beginning at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John Lodge, c/o Treas.
