Obituary of Evelyn-Inez Kane


BARRE TOWN - Evelyn Inez (George) Kane, formerly of Barre Town, passed away Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, in Provo, Utah.She was born July 21, 1926, in Jefferson, Schoharie County, New York, to Herbert LeRoy and Esther George George. She attended a one-room school in Red Hill, N.Y. and graduated from Ellenville High School. She graduated from Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., with bachelor's degrees in biology and math. While there she met Roy A. Kane Jr., and they were married June 17, 1950. They lived in New York City, Teaneck, N.J., Winston-Salem, N.C., Bethel, Conway, N.H., and Berwick, Maine, before moving to Barre Town in 1968.Evelyn worked outside the home early in her marriage, then stayed at home to raise her four children. She was a very active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many leadership and service roles, serving as church organist for many years. While living in Maine, she was instrumental in establishing Primary, a church program for children, in her area.In addition to her musical talent, she was known for her homemade candies. She loved puzzles, read widely, was a good writer, and possessed an intelligent, sometimes sassy and mischievous sense of humor. She also loved the outdoors (except the black flies) and enjoyed many hikes and camping trips with her family.When her children were older, she returned to work, retiring from service in the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles in 1996. Roy passed away in 2001.In 2008 her health deteriorated and she moved to Provo, Utah, where she lived with her daughter Sharon.She is deceased by her husband, parents, a sister Mary who died at birth, and brother Herbert Jr. who died in 1962.She is survived by brother Vincent George of Sundown, N.Y., sisters Ruth Cicchinelli of Owego, N.Y., Linda Greenwald of Cobleskill, N.Y., and Alberta George of North Eastham, Mass., as well as sons Franklin of Nashua, N.H., and Douglas of Salt Lake City, and daughters Sharon Hawks of Provo, Utah, and Marianne Kane of Fairborn, Ohio, plus 11 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.A memorial service celebrating her life will be held in Berlin in summer 2010, with private interment to take place at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.
