HARRIS _ Enid Mary (nee Williams) 1922 2006 Dear Enid passed away peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock on the morning of Thursday January 12th, 2006 with family and close friends at her side. She had been admitted to hospital on Monday, January 9th due to complications attributable to her long struggle with Alzheimer's and other conditions. The family deeply appreciates the support provided by nurses and staff in the Palliative Care unit. Their sensitivity to Enid's needs and reassurance to family and friends made this most difficult time as bearable as possible. Enid was predeceased in February, 2005 by John, her loving husband of 58 years. Their life together was one marked by intimacy and respect and a love obvious to all those around them. Enid is survived by her sister, Joy, brother-in-law, Bill, and niece and nephew, Verian and Christopher. Enid was born and raised in Walton-on-Thames outside London, England. She met John in London where they worked in the same office during the war years. Enid and John came to Canada in 1947, shortly after their wedding, and settled in White Rock. They built their first house on Thrift Avenue, followed by a house on Roper Avenue for Enid's parents Ted and Gertie Williams, who retired from England to White Rock in 1952. John and Enid later moved to West 54th Avenue in Vancouver where they lived for nearly 20 years. In 1990, Enid and John designed and built their retirement home on Marine Drive and returned to South Surrey. Enid was able to remain in her home until the end. Enid was an avid and accomplished hiker and mountaineer who, according to John, was able to tackle trails beyond his skills. She was devoted to exploring and preserving the hinterlands of British Columbia, a fact demonstrated by her long time commitment to the B.C. Mountaineering Club. Together with friends, she and John spent countless weekends hiking, camping, clearing trails and building shelters for the enjoyment of others. Enid was also an ongoing member of and contributor of time and resources to the White Rock and Surrey Naturalists. Enid and John made their home a haven for wildlife. Raccoons and a variety of birds from feeding stations and hands-on care of those in distress. She and John were generous contributors to local environmental and animal care organizations. Enid's skill and attention to detail as a gracious hostess and admired cook was appreciated by the many friends who were made so welcome at frequent dinner parties and social gatherings. Enid has left wonderful memories for so many people, and will be sadly missed by all who have had the pleasure of knowing her. At John and Enid's request, a memorial will be hosted at their home on Saturday, February 4th from 2 to 5 in the afternoon. Friends are invited to stop by and join the family in a celebration of Enid's life. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to honour Enid's memory with a gift is requested to make a donation to the BC Nature Conservancy.
