Obituary of Eleanor-M. Johnson


JOHNSON--Eleanor Muir, 91. Died at home in Far Hills, NJ, June 9, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by Coddy, her devoted husband of 70 years, her children, Sheila Wise, Terry Johnson and Lee Auchincloss, grandchildren, Alisa Kuhn, Eben MacNeille, Kelley Boyd, Coddy Johnson, Malcolm Auchincloss, Emily Auchincloss, and five great-grandchildren. Born in New York on February 11, 1920 to Malcolm and Lida Muir, she attended the Chapin School and Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT. On May 17, 1941 she married Coddy, the love of her life. She was an accomplished horticulturalist, serving as Director and Vice President of the Garden Club of America, President of the Garden Club of Somerset Hills, receiving numerous awards. Beginning in 1928, she spent every summer on her beloved Martha's Vineyard. She was a sailing member of the Edgartown Yacht Club, and many Island organizations. She will be remembered as a loving person of great executive ability, whose passionate devotion to her family and friends will endure always. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Friday, September 16, Lamington Presbyterian Church, Bedminster, NJ. In lieu of flowers, please send donations for The Eleanor Johnson Horticultural Speakers Fund to The Garden Club of Somerset Hills, PO Box 82, Oldwick, N.J. 08858.
