Edna Mae SmithVALLONIAEdna Mae Smith, 85, Vallonia, passed away at 9:41 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown, after a one-month illness.Edna was a member of Driftwood Christian Church. She was retired. She served on various committees for the Fort Vallonia Days Festival for more than 40 years, including presiding as the first Fort Vallonia president. She was the caretaker of the Fort Vallonia Museum for 42 years, a member of Seymour Elks Auxiliary, Jackson County Hospital Guild, representative for Driftwood Township Bicentennial and representative for Driftwood Township in the Antique Building at the Jackson County Fair. She worked at H.O. Canfield for 14 years, bookkeeper for Ashland Oil for 17 years, Driftwood Township assessor for 16 years and after retirement a nanny for 7½ years for Clay and Clark Hauer.She received her graduate equivalency diploma in 1973 from Brownstown High School, the same year her son graduated from Brownstown High School, and she attended Indiana University Southeast School of Business. She moved to Vallonia in 1930 when she was 18 months old to live with her grandparents, Azariah and Viola (Ode) Crockett Waskom.She was a member of Driftwood Christian Church and was pianist for Vallonia Methodist Church for 20 years. She also taught Sunday school for 46 years and was a Cub Scout den mother. Her hobbies included weaving baskets, quilting, cooking and baking pies.Her love for God, her church and her family gave her strength. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.Born in 1928, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Nona Waskom McMillan and Howard McMillan. On Jan. 11, 1942, in Kentucky, she married Noble "Snooty" Smith, who preceded her in death.Survivors include three children, Sue Smith Miller (Jim), Dr. Becky Smith-Eggeman (Ken) and Lisa Smith-Jorgensen (Chuck); grandchildren, Tollie Miller, Todd Miller, Shannel Novachek and Noelle Eaman; and great-grandchildren, Azariah Eaman, Abigail Eaman, Seadon Eaman, Meili Novachek, Siannah Novachek and Brooke Miller.She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Michael Smith; and brothers, Victor B. McMillan and James A. McMillan.A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Driftwood Christian Church, Vallonia, with Steve Gommel officiating. Burial will follow at Vallonia Cemetery.Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home in Vallonia and from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the churchMemorials may be given to Driftwood Christian Church, Fort Vallonia Days Festival and AIDS Foundation.
