Donald E. Karr, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 19, 2009. Don, as he was known to his friends, left a legacy of love, compassion, selflessness, generosity and humor. Born 84 years ago in Harrisburg, Pa., Don was the second son of the late George Washington and Hazel Johnston Karr. He grew up with a sister and three brothers. Don was retired from Exide Battery, where he managed the plaque room for over 30 years. He was very proud and honored by his service to his country. As an 18-year-old, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served as a sergeant in Company A, 517th Parachute Infantry. He took part in military campaigns in Rome-Arno, Southern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of a Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal for his service. A man of strong personal faith, Don's church home was Grace Baptist Church in Taylors. Surviving are his wife and true love of 56 years, Eva Underwood Karr; a daughter, Sally Karr Leonard of Greer; and son and daughter-in-law, David and Kim Bradley Karr of Travelers Rest. He was blessed with five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Scott, Heather and Michael Karr of Greenville, Stacy, Matthew and Garin Holst of Cambridge, England, Stephanie Karr of Greenville, and Seth and Mark Leonard of Greer; a sister, Patti Smith and husband Emory; and a brother, Harold Karr, all of Akron, Ohio. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers. The family gratefully acknowledges the compassionate and professional care provided by Dr. Hugh Dennis and the entire staff of St. Francis Hospital. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Blood Connection, 515 Grove Road, Greenville, SC 29605. Visitation will be held Monday, February 23, 2009, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at 12:15 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, Taylors. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.thomasmcafee.com
