Obituary of Dorothy-Strassburger Reynolds


Dorothy Strassburger Reynolds (nee Lamb)was born in Buffalo, NY, on Nov. 18, 1913. She died at home on July 12, 2001 of congestive heart failure. Her parents were J. Walter Lamb and Mabel Halberstadt Lamb. She received a BA degree from Hunter College and a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University. She spent many years as a freelance writer and later as regional director of the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was a devoted mother to her children, proud grandmother and loving wife. She was a life long resident of New York. In recent years she spent her time on numerous volunteer activities, for which she received significant recognition. She received the Janet Hopkins Award for exceptional volunteerism from the American Red Cross. She was past chair of the International Committee of the Red Cross Language Bank. She was on the staff of Recording for the Blind's Talking Brooks Program for the U.S. Library of Congress. A lover of nature, she was a founder of the Yonkers Audubon Society and served two years as their president. She was a ten-year docent for the Bronx Zoo. A lover of music, she was vice president of the Fine Arts Orchestra Society, which gives financial support to the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra. Concerned about her community, she was a member of the Yonkers Mayors Committee on Community Relations. She was called "a renaissance woman of wide interests dedicated to advancing the causes to which she gave so much of her time." She is survived by her husband W. Arnold Reynolds, her children, Raymond L Strassburger, Lynn Strassburger Brady and Walter A. Reynolds III, Richard E. Reynolds, and Marjory Reynolds Rode, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her first husband, Dr. Raymond C. Strassburger, died in January 1968. Visiting hours will be at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Mass of Christian Burial in Christ The King Church, on Monday July 16, at 11am.
