WOLFEBORO ; Carol Marie Thomas passed away the morning of Feb. 12, 2008, at Sunbridge Care of Wolfeboro, from complications of Parkinson's disease.Carol was born at home in Marion, Ind., on April 3, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Donald Thomas and the late Phyllis (Kindle) Thomas Maxwell. Her father died when she was a very young child and she was nurtured and raised by her mother and stepfather Harold Maxwell.Carol held bachelor's and master's degrees from Ball State University in Indiana. She worked as a speech pathologist first in Muskegon, Mich., and later for the Governor Wentworth School District for many years. She was highly respected by her colleagues for her clinical expertise. In 1993, she received the Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award from the New Hampshire Speech-Language-Hearing Association, Inc. in recognition of her outstanding contributions in clinical practice.She will be remembered for her wit, spunk and never ceasing love of chocolate, dogs and ducks. In spite of increasing disability due to her illness, Carol continued to run, bicycle, downhill and cross-country ski, snow shoe and hike until her last few years.When her health precipitated an early retirement from the Governor Wentworth School District she returned to Indiana to be near her family. In 2001, she returned to New Hampshire, living at Sugar Hill Retirement Community until her move to Sunbridge Care of Wolfeboro in 2006.Carol is survived by her beloved stepfather, Harold Maxwell; sisters, Kathy Rodmaker of Marion, Ind., and Sally Steiner of Tucson, Ariz., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her devoted New Hampshire family of friends, Carol Jane Van Landingham, Ellyn Leamon and Tom Anthony, along with their families, Natasha Itchkavich and her daughters, Briahna and Makina, Linda Fairchild, and Nancy Loud.There will be a celebration of Carol's life held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, at Sugar Hill located on Rolling Wood Drive, Wolfeboro. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be given to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 NW Ninth Avenue, Miami, Florida 33136-1494 or to your local Humane Society.Beacon Funeral Chapel, 75 Allen St., Rochester, is assisting her family and friends with arrangements.
