CATHERINE A. DAVIS ALBANY - Catherine A. Davis, 89, a longtime resident of Albany, died peacefully Wednesday Aug. 4, 2010 at the Manor in Morrisville. Catherine was born Oct. 25, 1920 in Craftsbury, the daughter of Irish immigrants, John and Mary (Johnson) Ryan. She was a 1938 graduate of Craftsbury Academy and in 1941 graduated from the DesGoesbriand School of Nursing in Burlington as a Registered Nurse. She worked at the Corinth Hospital in Corinth, N.Y. for one year, then at Fafner Bearing Company in Bristol, Conn. for two years. In later years, she worked at the Orleans Memorial Hospital in Newport, BelAire Nursing Home in Newport, and retired from Greensboro Nursing Home in 1993 after 18 years as a part-time night nurse. She was married on Oct. 30 1943, to Malcolm R. Davis, in Barton. They made their home in Albany where they raised two sons, Ross and Bob Davis. Kate assisted her husband at the Davis General Store in Albany, which they owned and operated from 1959 to 1983, as well as the Malcolm R. Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common, which they purchased with their son, Bob, in 1966. Following the death of Malcolm in November 1985, Kate continuted to assist Bob with greeting visitors to funerals and calling hours until her health declined. Kate was a member of the Albany Historical Society, a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima in Craftsbury, and recently earned her 55 year pin for membership in the Maple Valley Grange. She was active in the care of her friends and neighbors in Albany and Craftsbury who were in need of assistance for medical reasons or just for a batch of her famous rolls. She leaves her sons, Ross Davis and wife, Rita, and Robert (Bob) Davis and his wife, Louise, all of Craftsbury; five grand- children, Lynn Paradis and husband, Ron, of Franklin, Julie Marckres and husband, Steven, of Craftsbury, Lt. Col. Stephen Davis and wife, Michele, stationed in Germany, Valerie Adams and husband, Karl, of Craftsbury Common, and Jeffrey Davis and wife, Tammy, of Colchester; great-grandchildren, Cody, Brian, Catherine and Brandi Paradis, Kelly and Andrew Marckres, Sydney Flett, Andrew and Madison Davis, Kyle Adams, and Zachery and Anya Davis; two nieces, Frances Ferris Fredericks of East Hampton, Conn., and Rita Ryan Hill of Linden, Ala.; and their families and the extended Davis and Long family. She was predeceased by her husband, Malcolm; her parents; a brother, Leo Ryan; two sisters, Margaret Vincent and Madeline Ferris; a nephew, David Ferris; and a great-nephew, Alan Norris. A mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at 1 p.m., Sunday Aug. 8 at our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Craftsbury. Interment will follow in the Albany Village Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday Aug. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common.
