STEWART, Barbara Louise Barbara Louise Stewart died in her home on October 5, 2009 from breast cancer. Her family, friends, physicians and caregivers were honoured to serve her. Born in Norman Wells, NWT, Barbara grew up in Edmonton where she became a teacher and helped to establish programs for low vision in the Edmonton Public School system. Her first son has Autism; she became involved in support for people with this disease, becoming president of the Edmonton and later Alberta and Canada Autism societies. This led her to become an advocate the disabled and she was given the Premier's Award of Excellence in 1998 for her work. She was adventurous; it was Barbara who encouraged the family to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. She was involved in issues in her community, and was a benefactor and long-time volunteer for CKUA. Barbara dealt with her cancer and its many problems by joining Breast Friends Dragon Boat Team and living her life to the fullest. A memorial to appreciate and celebrate her joys, her accomplishments, and her life will be held at her home in Edmonton on November 8, 2009 from one to five in the afternoon.
