Mary Turner Hood, of Orange City, Florida passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2011. Born in McDon-ough, Georgia, the second daughter of Henry Marvin Turner and Elon Tolleson Turner, both deceased. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. George W. Hood, Orange City; and her sister, Margaret Turner Crumbley of Stockbridge, Georgia. She is also survived by two nephews, Alex R. Crumbley and Wade Crumbley; and one niece, Carol Crumbley Elliott, all of McDonough; eight great-nieces and great-nephews and their children. Mary graduated from McDonough High School and Creighton's School of Business Administration in Atlanta, GA. She was employed by the U.S. Treasury Department where she received a permanent rating. In World War II she transferred to the U.S. Army Chemical Warfare Procurement District. After the war she was employed as secretary to the Vice-President of the Atlanta Paper Company and later Executive Secretary to the Division Manager of Brown and Bigelow. In 1959 Mary moved to DeLand, Florida to accept the position of Administrative Assistant to the President of Stetson University, Dr. J. Ollie Edmunds. She continued her association with Stetson until Dr. Edmunds' retirement when she became his personal office manager until her retirement in 1986. She served on the Board of Managers of the Gualala Foundation, the Board of Trustees for Metropolitan Securities, Inc. and the Board of Trustees for The House Next Door. She served as president of the University Women's Club, member of the Krewe of Amalee, Chapter AN of P.E.O., the DeLand Country Club and Stetson Summit Club. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, where she served as Chairman of the Faith at Work outreach and also served on the Major Gifts Committee. She and her husband where advisers to Canterbury House (college student group) for 25 years. Mary was the recipient of the Doyle Carlton Award, the highest award given by the Stetson Alumni Association. She was elected to the Honor Circle of Mortar Board. Two awards are named for her: The George and Mary Hood award was established and endowed by the Gualala Foundation and is awarded annually by Stetson University. The House Next Door's George and Mary Hood award is given annually to the "intern of the year." She enjoyed portrait painting, bridge, reading and music. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in DeLand at 11:00 AM with Father W. Donald Lyon officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages that donations be made to the Episcopal Counseling Center at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, the Faith at Work Outreach Program at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 319 West Wisconsin Avenue, DeLand, FL 32720 or to the George and Mary Hood Endowed Scholarship at Stetson University, 421 North Woodland Boulevard Unit 8286, DeLand, FL 32723.
