WINTER HAVEN -- Mrs. Mary-dale K. Jones owned Winter Haven Business College, where she and her husband were teachers.Mrs. Jones died of lung failure Thursday (Nov. 20, 2003) at her home. She was 82.Mrs. Jones was born Jan. 9, 1921, in Johnston, S.C.In 1964, Mrs. Jones and her husband, who owned a business college in Lansdale, Pa., moved to Winter Haven to purchase the Winter Haven Business College. Mrs. Jones taught classes in short hand, among other subjects, along with her husband, said her daughter, Dale Edwards, of Winter Haven.She and her husband retired in the early 80s after moving the college to Lakeland, Edwards said.A former ballet teacher, Mrs. Jones belonged to the Ballet Conservatory, where she danced for exercise.In her later years, Edwards said, Mrs. Jones resisted devices she considered synonymous with old age -- wheelchairs, walkers, and canes."She was a very independent and spirited person. She had a mind of her own, and she intended to use it," her daughter remembers.Edwards said her relationship with her mother was more sisterly than daughter and mother."She was my role model, and I think she was a role model for many of her students," she said.Mrs. Jones was a member of DAR, Executive Women's Dinner Club, and St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Winter Haven.Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Willard L. Jones. In addition to her daughter, Dale, she is survived by her son, Joseph E. Edwards, Jr., Springvale, Maine; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter.Services will be 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.Memorials may be made to the Good Shepherd Hospice.
