LUCILLE (LUCY) GERTRUDE HOLMES BURLINGTON - Lucille (Lucy) Gertrude Holmes, 90, daughter of Mary and James Fisher, formerly of 116 Park Street, Burlington, passed away peacefully on Monday evening, July 25, 2011, in Fletch Allen Hospital. Lucille, a devout Christian, enjoyed being a member of the First Congregational Church of Burlington for 77 years. She would often discuss the topic of the sermons and how nice people were to her there. Lucille, a 1939 graduate of Burlington High School, lived through the austere times of the Great Depression, which taught her, like many others of her time, the importance of living within her means. Lucille was a generous person in terms of her time and her gifts. Lucille volunteered for 35 years as one of the original "Gray Ladies" at what is the current Fletcher Allen Hospital. Lucille loved the outdoors, Lake Champlain, and the mountains of Vermont. She coveted her walks with her brother, Ken Fisher, and later, her grandchildren, along the pebbled sand of Leddy Beach and her hikes up the winding trails of the Green Mountains. Her love for plants and flowers and her green thumb was obvious to all around her. She enjoyed showing her beautiful perennial garden to her friends and family and her labor preserving her annuals over the winters produced beautiful blooms for visitors to enjoy. Lucille was predeceased by her mother, father, brothers and sisters. Lucille lost the love of her life, Herman (Happy) Holmes, in 2002. She was with her son, Alan, when he passed away in 2004. Even through these losses, Lucille had an inner strength and positive attitude that persevered. She and her family had a mutual love for each other and closeness that makes her passing difficult for those she left behind. Every visit with them began and ended with kisses. Her relationship with her daughter-in-law, Jeannie Holmes, was special. Jeannie's regular visits and meals with Lucille were treasured by both. They were there for each other. Lucille leaves her daughter-in-law, Jeannie Holmes; her granddaughter, Christie Hobson and her husband, Jarrod, and their son, Tucker; her grandson, Adam Holmes and his wife, Robbi, and their sons, R. Harrison, William and Grant; and her nieces, nephews and treasured friends. Lucille will be missed by her special friends and extended family, to whom she made a special imprint on their lives and hearts. There will be a ceremony celebrating Lucille's life at 2 p.m. Sept. 10, 2011, at First Congregational Church, 38 South Winooski Ave., Burlington. There will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are in care of Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her honor may be sent to the First Congregational Church, 38 South Winooski Ave., Burlington, VT 05401.
