Alan was educated at Epsom College and St. Bartholomew s Hospital Medical School, and was a fellow of the British, Canadian and American Colleges of Surgeons. He practiced surgery in Drumheller from 1951 to 1973, and in Vernon from 1973 to 1985, including two years as Chief of Surgery. An unstinting volunteer and public leader, he served the Drumheller School Board, the Rotary Clubs of Drumheller and Vernon (elected as a Paul Harris Fellow), the Drumheller Music Festival, the Alberta Provincial Music Festival, St. Magloire s Anglican Church/Drumheller, the Diocese of Calgary executive, All Saints Anglican Church/Vernon, the Diocese of Kootenay executive, and was an Officer Brother in the Order of St. John. Alan was an accomplished Mason, a corresponding member of QCCC, and was particularly proud to have been Past Master of Symbol and Kalamalka Lodges, as well as Provincial Grand Prior of the Knights Templar. Alan was an enthusiastic sailor, gardener, choir member, and typist extraordinaire; an innovative composter and a keen recycler. His sense of humour was unique, and has permanently affected those that knew him. The greatest joy of his life was to have his family gathered around him. Alan s family are grateful to the former colleagues and staff who came to say good-bye. Thanks to Vernon Jubilee Hospital Emergency and 3 West for their kind care and attention, and special thanks to Dr. Paul Smylie and the ICU and Respiratory staff for their exceptional and affectionate support.
