PATTERSON, Catherine Elizabeth November 15, 1908 April 18, 2008 Born in London England, Catherine immigrated to Canada at age of four with her parents George and Alice Chellew. The eldest of five children Bess, as she was known, defended her younger siblings as they grew up the Junction district of Toronto. She graduating from Oakwood Collegiate in 1926, where she was very active in sports, and continued to play baseball at Ontario Normal School. She started teaching in Swansea, where her family then resided. In 1938 she married Morley Patterson; they had two children, John, who died in infancy, and Robert who lives in Victoria. They bought a house in the Humber valley where they shared a wonderful life in a close-knit neighbourhood. Bess' passion for athletics continued with tennis, curling and later lawn bowling. Along with teaching at West Prep School in Forest Hill, she volunteered with the Victorian Order of Nurses and the Canadian Club among others. For many summers she enjoyed the cottage on Georgian Bay. Life in the city included many family gatherings and celebrations. She lived in her beloved Old Millside home until 2001, when a stroke caused her to move to Victoria. Catherine's strength, quiet sense of humour, and willingness to help others have been always been an inspiration to family and friends. We honour her now. We also wish to thank the friendly staff at the Priory Hospital, and especially RNs. Elisa and Suzanne for their attentive care, and her loving caregiver, Lydia, who has been her companion for five years. Catherine is survived by her brother Cliff and his wife Fran, her two granddaughters, great granddaughter, and her cousin and many nieces and nephews and their offspring.
