A world renowned endocrinologist and professor emeritus of medicine, died on February 27, 2004 of respiratory failure in St. Louis, Missouri. Born in Rochester, NY in 1919, Dr. Frawley graduated from Aquinas Institute in 1937. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Rochester in 1941, where he was a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity, president of the Newman Club, as well as a football star who received the Phillips Award for his achievements on the gridiron, and was drafted by the Detroit Lions. After reporting to football camp, Dr. Frawley realized his true calling was medicine and proudly obtained a medical degree from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine in 1944. Two years later, Dr. Frawley married Marigrace Cecelia Gould of Rochester, NY, with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. She died in 2001. Dr. and Mrs. Frawley were preceded in death by their youngest son, Brian Stephen, in 1980. Dr. Frawley was a captain in the US Army and served in the medical corps in Germany and England during and after World War II. His early days in medicine took him to Harvard University and the National Institutes of Health as a research associate. After serving as professor of medicine at Albany Medical College, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he was professor and chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine at St. Louis University School of Medicine from 1963 to 1975. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Frawley served a large number of patients through clinical practice within which his focus was the treatment of diabetes and other metabolic disorders. Dr. Frawley was president of the American College of Physicians in 1981 and was designated as a master by the college, the highest honor bestowed by the organization. He received numerous awards, including the Alfred Stengel Memorial Award and the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians, an honorary fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and the Archbishop John L. May Award for distinguished health care ministry in St. Louis. He conducted numerous studies on diabetes and those who suffer with the potentially fatal disease without visible symptoms. He authored over one hundred research papers and articles, and contributed to many textbooks in medicine. Among his survivors are a son, Thomas J. Frawley, and a daughter, Colleen F. Mehan, both of St. Louis; three sisters, Margaret Herman, Mary Jane Schwind and Bernice Rigney, all of Rochester; and six grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas F.
