MILTON — Susann Shaw Connelly, born Jan. 1, 1919, died in Albany, Ore., on June 11, 2009. She is survived by her daughter, Susann Foster Brown and husband, Larry Brown of Milton; her grandson, David H. Brown and wife, Rebecca, of Kingston, R.I.; her granddaughter, Kathy Preston of New Paltz, N.Y., and great-granddaughters, Sophia Susann Brown and Nora Foster Preston; also cherished friends, Kathy Farnsworth of Corvallis, Ore., and Dorothy Pitchford of Vallejo, Calif. Raised in a series of boarding schools, she married Bill Foster in 1938, who encouraged her to audition as a model in NYC. She quickly became a top model at Vogue magazine in the late 1930s and 1940s and had a role as "Miss Vogue" in "Cover Girl" with Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly. She always attributed her fame to be pure luck and having "good cheekbones." Facing a career in Hollywood, she chose to leave for her daughter's birth. She successfully combined motherhood and a career in television and radio. Her second marriage was to John Connelly, a newsman at WHN radio in NYC. Suddenly widowed at 60, she embarked on a creative career in fine embroidery, achieving master craftsman certification in the Embroiderer's Guild of America. Susann was a devoted mother, a proud grandmother, and a delighted great-grandmother. An avid gardener, she tended plants with the eye of an artist. Her final years were challenging because she lost the ability to do most of the things she enjoyed. She retained a sense of humor and expressed deep gratitude for the many friends who helped her in her time of need. The family extends special thanks to the staff at Mennonite Village in Albany, Ore., for their extraordinary skill and care. Susann's wish was to have no services.
