SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. ; Sarah J. Maguire, 79, died peacefully on March 8, 2009, with her family at her side after a long, courageous battle with cancer.Sarah was born Aug. 24, 1929, the daughter of Victor H. and Ruby (Graham) Doushkess. She was born in Easton, Pa., and graduated as salutatorian of her class. After attending Lafayette College, she married her husband of 53 years, Frank A. Maguire Jr.Sarah and Frank decided to move to New Hampshire from New York to raise their children away from the city. They moved to Lake Winnipesaukee, where Sarah co-owned and with her husband operated Lauranne Village, a family resort, for more than 40 years.After raising her six children and retiring, Sarah and Frank wintered in Sun City Center and moved here year-round in 1997.Prior to moving to Florida, Sarah was very active in local politics, serving as moderator for Ward 6, Laconia, N.H., for many years. She took her active personality with her when she moved to Florida and became an active member of many organizations, including serving as president of her condo association, and she served on the board of directors of many other organizations.She was extremely active in her church, where she founded and operated the thrift store for Our Lady of Guadaloupe. She spent countless hours and devoted much time to help the people of her church and community and her generosity and commitment to others will never be forgotten.Sarah enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren and friends and had the opportunity to travel to many parts of the world, including China, Russia, England, France, Switzerland, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Hawaii, Turkey, Egypt, Germany, Budapest, Hungary and Amsterdam, Holland.Her grandchildren will be especially grateful for all the wonderful memories she blessed them with. Her traditions of her amazing Thanksgiving meals and giant-sized Christmas stockings that she hand-made will always be treasured.Sarah was predeceased in March 2000 by her husband, Frank A. Maguire Jr., and her daughter, Kathleen J. Burke, M.D., in June 2007.She is survived by her children, Laurie Hoey and her husband, Peter, of Gilford, N.H., Virginia Grace and her husband, William, of Stratham, N.H., Frank A. Maguire III and his wife, Cathleen, of Laconia, N.H., Donna Maguire of Honduras, and Margaret DeSantis of Tampa; son-in-law Stephen Burke of Underhill Center, Vt.; grandchildren Sarah Hoey of Tampa, Meg Hoey of Gilford, N.H., Allison and Ryan Grace of Stratham, N.H., Amanda Reneau and her husband, Tom, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jennifer, Kimberly, and Kristina Maguire of Laconia, Heidi Maguire of Salt Lake City, Utah, Erin Burke of New York, N.Y, Christopher Burke of Underhill Center, Vt., Alexander Burke and his fiance, Catie, of Germantown, Md., and Elizabeth DeSantis of Tampa; and one great-grandson, Tyler Renau of Colorado Springs, Colo.A Catholic Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at Our Lady of Guadaloupe with her close friend and pastor, Father Demitrio Lorden, officiating. A Catholic burial will be celebrated in the spring at Union Cemetery, Laconia, N.H.Memorial donations may be made to Lifepath Hospice, 3725 Upper Creek Drive, Ruskin FL 33573; or Our Lady of Guadaloupe Catholic Church Food Pantry, US Hwy. 301, South Wimauma FL 33598.
