Robert L. 79, Spencer, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002. He was born in Owego, NY February 22, 1923 the son of the late Paul Jones Smith and Margaret Zelma Eastham. Robert served as a fighter pilot in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He retired as a carpenter and stone mason for many years. He was a member of the Van Etten Community Methodist Church and the Owego VFW Post #1371. Robert is survived by his son, Dale (Susan) Butts, Joppa, MD; daughter, Carolyn (Richard L.) Merrick, Spencer; 4 grandchildren; Duane F. Butte, Richard F. Merrick, Kristen L. Butte, Denise L. Treat; 2 great grandchildren; Jessica Butts and Jennie Lyn Treat; sisters: Marjorie Dannemann, Spencer and Carol Lent, Van Etten: brothers: Neil (Merilyn) Smith, Spencer and Stephen (Lillian) Smith, West Babylon, Long Island, NY; sisters-in-law; Marjorie H. Smith, Richfield Springs, NY and Frances Smith, Wildwood, FL; many nieces and nephews. Robert was predeceased by his wife, Jennie L. Smith and 4 brothers: Paul, Carl, Leland, and Arthur. Funeral services will be Friday, March 8, 2002 at 2 PM with Rev. Donald S. Miller officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 PM. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Spencer, NY. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Lourdes Hospice West, 596 5th Avenue, Owwego, NY 13827.
